Water Quality

One of three beaches used to access Lake Montclair. Playground and covered pavilion with picnic tables and barbecue grills on opposite hilltops. Basketball hoops and a volleyball court (volleyball net available during beach season). Fishing pier and large amphitheater overlooking the lake. Large grass field behind parking lot. Public restrooms available during beach season. This park is open from dawn to dusk.

History

Lake Montclair is a man-made, 108-acre recreational lake in Dumfries, Virginia, created over 50 years ago by damming Powell's Creek to serve as the centerpiece of the Montclair planned community, established in 1969. Managed by the Montclair Property Owners' Association (MPOA), it serves residents with three beaches and recreational boating.

The 2026 festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Dolphin Beach (located at 4398 Spillway Lane, Montclair, VA).

Participants can choose from five different race options:

750m: A single rectangular loop, popular for beginners.

1.5K: A double loop of the 750m course.

2.5K: A single large loop from Dolphin Beach to West Beach and back.

5K: A double loop of the 2.5K course.

Double Dog Dare (6.5K): A challenge where participants complete both the 5K and 1.5K races to earn a unique finisher medal.

Yes, a pre-race open water swimming clinic is typically held the evening before (May 15th, 2026) at Dolphin Beach. It is free for registered festival participants and available for a small fee for non-participants.

The event is open to all swimmers, including non-USA Swimming members. However, there are age and experience recommendations for longer distances:

750m: Ages 9 and up.

1.5K: Ages 11 and up.

2.5K: Ages 11 and up.

5K: Recommended only for those with prior open water experience; athletes must be at least 13 years old.

While it is a sanctioned meet, non-members can purchase a one-day event membership (approx. $12–$15) to participate. This must be completed 1–3 days prior to the event; no on-site registrations are permitted on race day.

The freshwater lake is expected to be between 68°F and 75°F.

If the water temperature is below 78°F, wetsuits are generally permitted. For competitive USA Swimming scoring, specific FINA/USA Swimming rules regarding wetsuit thickness (3mm–5mm) and coverage apply.

Race caps are provided in packets, goggles, and a parka for after the race as it's pretty cool most years. While water and bananas are provided post-race, bringing personal hydration recommended. A food truck will be at the meet as well.

On-site parking at the beach is reserved for officials, volunteers, and spectators/athletes with disabilities only. Spectators and participants are to park at Moncure Park or Pattie Elementary School.
